"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." -Malcolm X

And if you’re not careful, you’ll miss out when Lattes and Lit returns on Wednesday, January 29 with our newest book: The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Meeting biweekly at the new time of 6:30 and featuring commentary from Imam Abdul Malik Merchant, discuss with fellow readers the themes of truth, power, control, and racism pulled from the lessons of history as we “explore how the stories we tell—and the ones we don’t—shape our realities.”

Registration is free but donations are encouraged to help fund future events!  Participants should bring their own copies of the book and read Chapters I and II by the first meeting.  See you there inshallah!  Open to participants 18+

Schedule:

January 29 - Chapters I and II

February 12 - Chapter III

February 26 - Chapter IV

About the Book:

In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Ta-Nehisi Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind. Then he takes readers along with him to Columbia, South Carolina, where he reports on his own book’s banning, but also explores the larger backlash to the nation’s recent reckoning with history and the deeply rooted American mythology so visible in that city—a capital of the Confederacy with statues of segregationists looming over its public squares. Finally, in the book’s longest section, Coates travels to Palestine, where he sees with devastating clarity how easily we are misled by nationalist narratives, and the tragedy that lies in the clash between the stories we tell and the reality of life on the ground.

Written at a dramatic moment in American and global life, this work from one of the country’s most important writers is about the urgent need to untangle ourselves from the destructive myths that shape our world—and our own souls—and embrace the liberating power of even the most difficult truths.

“We all begin as strangers, and we meet people for two reasons – as a blessing, or as a lesson.”

And allow this book club to be both, a blessing in discussion and a lesson in knowledge!  Join us for the return of Lattes and Lit, Qahwa's ongoing book club!  In this newest iteration, we will cover Malcolm Gladwell's recent publicationTalking to Strangers, an exploration of psychology and sociology told through historical tales.

Featuring commentary from Imam Abdul Malik Merchant, converse with fellow readers in discussion groups that highlight the themes of the unknown, bias, truth, and assumptions we hold about strangers and the lessons we can learn to live as fuller and more intelligent Muslims.

Meeting Biweekly starting Wednesday October 23, whether you're dipping your toes into the literary world for the first time or are already an avid reader, this is one event you won't want to miss!

Registration is free but donations are encouraged to help fund future events!  Books will not be provided and participants should read the Intro, and Chapters 1-2 by the first meeting.  See you there inshallah!  Open to participants 18+

Schedule:

October 23 - Intro + Chapters 1, 2

November 6 - Chapters 3, 4, 5

November 20 - Chapters 6, 7, 8

December 4 - Chapters 9, 10

December 18 - Chapters 11, 12

About the Book:

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to one another that isn’t true?

Talking to Strangers is a classically Gladwellian intellectual adventure, a challenging and controversial excursion through history, psychology, and scandals taken straight from the news. He revisits the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, the suicide of Sylvia Plath, the Jerry Sandusky pedophilia scandal at Penn State University, and the death of Sandra Bland—throwing our understanding of these and other stories into doubt.

Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don’t know. And because we don’t know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world.

About the Film:

In 2015, three Muslim-American students were executed while eating dinner in their home in Chapel Hill, NC. In 36 Seconds: Portrait of a Hate Crime, filmmaker Tarek Albaba makes an impassioned case for justice for these innocents and for his community. The film charts the victims’ families’ agonizing overnight pivot from trauma to advocacy as they struggle to prevent their loved ones’ deaths from being dismissed as the result of a random parking dispute.

They courageously speak the truth about the hate crime that has destroyed their lives, about the overt and insidious ways racism plays out in our society and about the need to reform a hate crime system that is broken. This is a project about grace and the will to fight for the truth in the worst of circumstances.
