Is Islam Against Humanism? 3-week module

  • 46903 Sugarland Rd Sterling, VA 20164 USA (map)

A 3 week module led by Ustadh Saad Yacoob with a lecture and interactive discussion focusing on the contradictions between Islam and the most important Western philosophical concept of the last 400 years: Humanism. Ages 20+

Humanism - the idea that human beings should be the greatest priority in all things - is a basic assumption of almost all Western thought for the last 400 years. But does Western humanism contradict the basic tenants of Islam? And, if it does, can there be a humanism that is authentic to Islam and its tradition?

This 3 week module will be divided into the following parts:

1. How Humanism Contradicts Islam

2. The Islamic World View

3. Towards an Islamic Humanism

Each session will be divided into lecture and a discussion. The lecture will put forward a framework, and the discussion will break the audience into groups and ask them to answer questions based on the framework put forward in the lecture.

Join us for a thought provoking investigation and discussion on a topic central to understanding the modern world
