Author and storyteller Salma Hasan Ali will talk about the importance of storytelling to preserve our memories, as well as to promote understanding and dispel misperceptions. She will discuss her book, 30 Days: Stories of Gratitude, Tradition, and Wisdom, covered by NPR’s Morning Edition and NowThis -- as well as her just released 30 Days Journal, where we can write our own book of personal stories.
Salma started the 30 Days project eleven years ago as a way to share the essence of the month of Ramadan with her children and community. Since then, it has grown into an international storytelling platform that has connected people of different faiths and backgrounds around issues we all share in common -- expressing gratitude, doing good deeds, preserving traditions, cherishing wisdoms from elders, and more.
The book is a collection of personal stories, as well as reflections by prominent Muslims including Imam Mohamed Magid, researcher Dalia Mogahed, scholar Suhaib Webb, Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, photographer Peter Sanders, among others. The book contains exquisite original illuminations, miniature paintings, and calligraphy by Afghan artist Sughra Hussaini; the journal contains inspiring Sufi artwork by renowned artist Aadil Abedi.
Salma's books are handmade by artisans, each a work of art in itself -- a collector's edition, only a few hundred books are produced, by Drik, an organization founded by renowned photographer and activist Shahidul Alam. The book and journal will be available for signing and purchase at the event. With each book/journal, you receive a beautiful set of postcards of the artwork as a gift; a portion of proceeds will be donated to ADAMS' Qahwa Cafe.
